Documentary Style Photographer & Filmmaker | Visual Storyteller Focused on Human Rights and Social Change
José Lopes Amaral is a Luxembourg-born documentary photographer and filmmaker based in Taiwan. Known for his powerful visual storytelling, he focuses on social issues, human rights, and the human dimension of political and environmental change.
Amaral gained international recognition for his coverage of the 2019 Hong Kong pro-democracy protests, where he documented the fight for freedom and democracy while working in high-risk frontline environments. That period marked a defining chapter in his career and strengthened his commitment to ethical, human-centred storytelling.
After years of frontline reporting, Amaral made the deliberate decision to step away from high-risk conflict coverage to focus on sustainable, long-form documentary-style work. This transition reflects a conscious shift toward deeper narratives, slower investigative processes, and projects that allow for reflection, context, and long-term impact.
He began his visual career in Luxembourg in 2009, covering the Portuguese community for local media. With a background in visual communication and window display design, he combines artistic sensitivity with journalistic integrity. His move to Asia in 2013 and transition into video journalism in 2016 expanded his practice into multimedia storytelling.
Today, Amaral focuses on documentary-style photography, independent filmmaking, and visual projects exploring the human condition, social inequality, sustainability, and cultural identity. His work prioritises depth over immediacy, aiming to create lasting visual records rather than reactive coverage.
